Countless patients are plagued by dental fear or dental anxiety. For many, this keeps them from getting the general dental care their smile needs to stay healthy and look attractive. At Atlantic Dental Partners, we have taken extra measures to ensure that dental anxiety is not an obstacle to our state-of-the-art dental services. While we offer a number of relaxing amenities throughout our office, including warm blankets, scented towels, Netflix and wireless headphones, we realize that some patients need additional help to relieve their anxiety. Therefore, our dentists are qualified to offer valued and safe options in sedation dentistry, including oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. We are confident that we can provide the painless and rewarding experience you deserve, regardless of your level of anxiety or fear about going to the dentist.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a common form of sedation dentistry, and one that requires no needles. You will be prescribed a specific sedative pill to take about 30 minutes prior to your appointment. During the procedure, you can expect to be fully relaxed but awake and aware of your surroundings. Most patients are completely undisturbed by the dental work being performed and may not even remember the procedure after it is done. Rest assured that we will closely monitor your pulse, oxygen saturation rate and blood pressure during the entire procedure. Due to the effects of the medication, it is necessary that you bring someone with you to drive you home after your appointment. Contact us today to schedule an appointment at either of our locations.
Sedation Dentistry FAQs
Which sedation method is right for me?
The best dental sedation method is determined on a case-by-case basis and varies for each patient. During your first visit, we’ll discuss your medical history, any dental anxiety you may have, and create a treatment plan to fit your needs.
How long does it take for oral conscious sedation to wear off after my appointment?
Oral conscious sedation typically wears off about an hour after your treatment. You may still feel some effects for the remainder of the day, including drowsiness or decreased responsiveness. Due to this, we strongly encourage you to be accompanied by someone who can drive you home after your visit.
Can I eat before a sedation appointment?
Typically, you should avoid eating for up to 6 hours before treatment. Once your sedation dentistry method has been determined, our team will provide you with detailed instructions for before and after your appointment.
